If you follow what the government and food industry tells you like a broken record, you probably still believe that soy has some health benefits and that it’s a good idea to consume at least some. After all, what could be bad about the innocent soy milk or tasteless tofu?

Everything is wrong about it and we’ve been fed a bunch of lies. You have to consider the fact that all that you think you know about soy is the result of careful marketing over years and years that worked so well that everybody is now convinced that it’s a super-food that could feed the world and save the environment. If you head over to your local health food store, you’ll find that almost every packaged product is soy based.  Most other products there are grain based, which renders those stores a place where vegetarians go to ruin their health, but this is a whole other story.

Of course, the main reasons why you should avoid soy are the same reasons why you should stay away from other grains and legumes. Lectins will mess with your leptin sensitivity (hunger and energy expenditure signals), making your brain think it’s hungry even when your body has more than enough calories. Leptin resistance could lead to insulin resistance, which could lead to a host of problems also known as the metabolic syndrome. Levels of phytates in soy are also very high. Phytates bind to minerals like zinc, calcium, iron and magnesium and make them unavailable for you.

You might already know about those properties of grains and legumes, but here are facts that make soy a particularly bad source of calories. First though, let’s debunk a common myth.

Asians and their soy consumption

You know that Asians consume large quantities of soy regularly, right? Well that’s just wrong! This is what the industry wants us to believe because it’s a common fact that Asians generally live longer and healthier than Americans. The industry then only had to point us to the consumption of soy products of Asians for us to believe in the health benefits of it.

If you ask an Asian family you know, chances are you’ll realize that they don’t eat that much soy.

This is another of those ideas that were implanted in the general consciousness that we take for a fact without questioning its origin.

Asians traditionally eat small amounts of soy and most of it is in a fermented form like nato, miso or tempeh. When you properly ferment beans and grains, they usually lose a lot of their lectin and phytate content.

When they don’t have a fermented form of soy, they usually have it with fish broth in soups, which is very high in minerals and somewhat counter acts the effects of soy.

It’s funny to learn that a lot of those other cultures seem to instinctively know how to prepare certain foods to minimize their downsides (soaking, sprouting, fermenting)

It’s also revealing to learn that Asian people generally don’t eat brown rice and prefer the most refined white rice. Again, the rice looses most of its toxic effects when refined. Of course, eating high quantities of rice is still eating a high proportion of carbohydrates, but then again, it’s not from fructose, the worst kind of sugar.

Goitrogenic effects of soy

Soy contains high levels of goitrogens. Goitrogens are compounds that inhibit the thyroid’s ability to utilize iodine correctly which could lead to hypothyroid problems.

Thyroid problems are so prevalent today, especially for women, that it’s now as if it’s normal to have thyroid problems.

When you have an underperforming thyroid gland (hypothyroidism), your whole metabolism slows down. You feel cold all the time, you have low energy and you catch just about any virus that floats around because of a weakened immune system.

Be aware though that when it comes to goitrogens, soy is not the only offender. Cruciferous vegetables (cauliflower, broccoli, cabbage, Brussels sprouts) have these effects too. Cooking those vegetables will eliminate most of these effects, which is not the case with soy. Of course most vegetables contain toxins of some kind so it’s always a good idea to eat a good variety instead of always eating the same vegetables.

Protease inhibitors in soy

As if lectins and phytates where not enough, soy also has protease inhibitors, also called trypsin inhibitors. These toxins block the action of enzymes that have the responsibility of digesting certain proteins, but it can also lead to a host of other problems.

Soy and estrogen

This is a big problem. Soy contains plant estrogens in the form of isoflavones which effectively raise your estrogen levels and therefore lowers your testosterone levels. Those hormones are in competition so more of one means less of the other.

Messing up your estrogen levels has devastating effects for men and women as well as children and newborns.

Men

Improper balance of testosterone to estrogen in men can lead to a lower libido, fat accumulation around the waist and loss of energy, stamina and virility and even man boobs (gynecomastia).

Women

Having abnormally high levels of estrogen doesn’t mean you’ll be more of a woman. It could disrupt your periods, fertility and put you at risk for breast cancer.

Newborns

What we feed our newborn child is always a first concern of course. Nowadays however, some formula preparations contain soy in large quantities. A baby needs to have his hormones in the proper ratio to develop normally and a baby boy needs a lot of testosterone to form is sexual traits. Too much estrogen at this stage can cause failure to thrive, underdeveloped testicles and problems when puberty comes like gynecomastia, lack of facial hair and emasculation. It is said that the amount of estrogen-producing soy in some formula preparations could be the equivalent of consuming 5 birth control pills per day.

Soy is destroying the planet

Some vegetarians argue that eating meat destroys the planet and that replacing meat protein with soy is a good alternative. Absolute nonsense. Those who believe in that have absolutely no clue about the way the industrialized system works.

Soy crops are probably the most destructive of all the monocrops. They rob the soil of nutrients without giving back, they’re one of the pesticide laden crops and they are now almost all genetically modified. The major part of it goes to feed livestock, who get sick eating it. Some factory produced cuts of meat are now injected with extra soy. This is yet another reason to stay clear of factory-farmed animals: save yourself and the environment from soy.

Monsanto, the largest soy producer now sues every farmer who gets their soy cross-pollinated by Monsanto’s patented GMO crops. Cross-pollination used to be the way plants reproduced, now it’s illegal! It should actually be the opposite where the farmers sue Monsanto for infecting their crops, but of course Monsanto is now too big to be vulnerable. They have a very strong political power because of the lobbying they do.

Conclusion

I hope this article gave you reasons compelling enough to stay away from this inferior source of food and that you’ll choose vegetables and fruits instead, which  are a far superior source of nutrition.

With all the loads of scientific data available that soy (even edamame) is not a healthy part of anyone’s diet, it shocks me how many folks are still on the “soy is good for you” bandwagon – even people who should know better like your doctor!

I just got an email from a reader the other day who had been to multiple doctors, both holistic and conventional, and all but one of them were telling her that plenty of soy in her diet would help her menopause symptoms.

I had another shocking conversation recently with a doctor of Internal Medicine who had no idea soy was a potent goitrogenic food and actively suppressed thyroid function.

Be careful folks.  It’s dangerous out there! You really need to do your research and be on your toes at all times when it comes to nutritional advice even from someone in a white coat!

For those of you who just sat down because you are so taken aback by the notion that soy is not actually the healthfood you thought it was, here are 170 scientific reasons to back up this assertion.

Fermented Soy Fine in Small Amounts for Some People

Please note that fermented soy in small, condimental amounts as practiced in traditional Asian cultures is fine for those who have healthy thyroid function. Only miso, tempeh, natto and traditionally brewed soy sauce fall under this category. In addition, if you want to sprinkle a few edamame on your salad or have a few small cubes of tofu in your miso soup from time to time, that is fine too. A little soy lecithin in a nonGMO snack food from time to time isn’t necessarily a problem either. Just don’t make it a regular part of your diet!

If you have any sort of thyroid issues going on, however, it is really the best policy to avoid all soy all the time as soy is a potent goitrogen (thyroid suppressor) even if fermented.

A 1991 study found that eating only 2 TBL/day of roasted and pickled soybeans for 3 months to healthy adults who were receiving adequate iodine in their diet caused thyroid suppression with symptoms of malaise, constipation, sleepiness, and goiters (Nippon Naibunpi Gakkai Zasshi 1991, 767: 622-629)!

Six premenopausal women with normal menstrual cycles were given 45 mg of soy isoflavones per day. This is equivalent to only 1-2 cups of soy milk or 1/2 cup of soy flour!   After only one month, all of the women experienced delayed menstruation with the effects similar to tamoxifen, the anti-estrogen drug given to women with breast cancer (American Journal of Clinical Nutrition 1994 Sep;60(3):333-340).

Dietary estrogens in the form of soy foods were found to have the potential to disrupt the endocrine system with the effects in women similar to taking the breast cancer drug tamoxifen (Proceedings of the Society for Experimental Biology and Medicine 1995 Jan;208(1):51-9).

Estrogens consumed in the diet at low concentrations were found to stimulate breast cells much like DDT to increase enzymatic activity which leads to breast cancer (Environmental Health Perspectives 1997 Apr;105 (Suppl 3):633-636).

The soy isoflavones genistein and daidzein appear to stimulate existing breast cancer growth indicating risk in consuming soy products if a woman has breast cancer. (Annals of Pharmacotherapy 2001 Sep;35(9):118-21).

Direct evidence that soy isoflavones genistein and daidzein suppress the pituitary-thyroid axis in middle-aged rats fed 10 mg soy isoflavones per kilo after only 3 weeks as compared with rats eating regular rat chow (Experimental Biology and Medicine 2010 May;235(5):590-8).

Don’t eat soy when you are pregnant ladies!  Scientific research has shown that the developing male fetus which is exposed to soy phytoestrogens may suffer from higher susceptibility to prostate cancer later in life (Prostate 1994;24(2):67-78).

Keep that soy away from your daughters!   Dietary genistein (soy phytoestrogen) in developing female rats had the effect of significantly accelerated puberty (Toxicol Sci 1999 Oct;51(2):236-44).

In addition, early exposure to soy is associated with less female typical play patterns in girls at 42 months of age (Environ Health Perspect v. 119(12); Dec 2011).

Hey guys! Soy protein powder strips your masculinity!  A study of 12 men aged 18 years and older experienced a 19% drop in serum testosterone in only 28 days when supplemented with 56 grams of soy protein powder over that same time period (Prev 2007;16:829—33).

Do NOT feed soy formula to your babies!  Female newborns who are orally exposed to genisin, the glycosylated form of genistein (soy phytoestrogen) experienced harm to the reproductive system in the form of “delayed vaginal opening… abnormal estrous cycles, decreased fertility, and delayed parturition.” (Environmental Health Perspective 2009 Dec;117(12):1883-9).

Dangers of Soy - Reliv Isn't a Miracle

Are you convinced yet about the dangers of soy? Many aren’t. “Is soy bad for you? …Really?” I hear the question so often I want to scream.


After decades of hearing marketing spin about how soy is a wonder food, a protein-rich legume able to rescue us from our dependence on meat, I suppose it’s understandable why so many people have yet to understand fully the dangers of soy. Really, you’re not going to get the full story unless you research it on your own. And why would you, when soy is “universally” touted as a health food?

Well, it isn’t.


Dangers of Soy

Thankfully, more and more independent research has been done regarding the dangers of soy, and what it’s revealed should scare you.

Phytoestrogens

Soy is higher in phytoestrogens than just about any other food source. Phytoestrogens are plant-based estrogens that mimic estrogen in our bodies. In recent years, you may have read about studies which indicate phytoestrogens are good for you. But ask yourself, who funded those studies? The soy industry, that’s who. Independent research has clearly shown that consuming phytoestrogens is downright dangerous for the human body.

It’s only common sense. No one argues, for example, that a leading cause of breast cancer, endometriosis, uterine fibroids, infertility, and low libido is unopposed estrogen, or estrogen dominance. Why, then, would anyone argue that we should consume more of a food high in estrogen?

An infant taking the recommended amount of soy formula is consuming a hormone load equivalent of 4 birth control pills a day! Is it any wonder we’ve seen such a dramatic rise in precocious puberty with young girls starting their periods at 6 and 7?

Goitrogenic

Soy will destroy your thyroid. Many foods are goitrogenic (thyroid suppressing), but soy is king of them all. Goitrogens work by preventing your thyroid from getting the necessary amount of iodine. Friends, I believe this is what happened to Oprah’s thyroid. She pushed soy for years, featured it in everyone one of her “healthy” diets, and it destroyed her thyroid. If your thyroid fails, what happens? You gain weight. You have a harder time regulating your moods. You get colder more easily. You’re more easily fatigued. You demonstrate an inability to concentrate and remember details. The list goes on. You simply don’t want to mess with your thyroid.

Phytates

Phytates are enzyme-inhibitors that block mineral absorption in human digestive tract. They are naturally present in all grains, seeds, nuts, and legumes (which is why everyone should read this primer on how to eat grains, if you eat them at all.) But soy is so high in phytates that it’s almost impossible to get rid of them. Simply soaking soy overnight in an acidic medium won’t do the trick. Soy must be fermented in order to be digestible to humans. That means that if you eat soy at all, you should stick to fermented soy products like miso, tempeh, natto, or a naturally fermented soy sauce (tamari).

Trypsin inhibitors

Finally soy is rich in trypsin inhibitors. Trypsin is a digestive enzyme we need to properly digest protein. Without enough trypsin, you’ll experience many digestive problems including stomach cramps, diarrhea, and bleeding. You’ll also be leaving yourself open to future problems with your pancreas.

Debunking The Asian Soy Myth

But, people say, what about Asians? They eat soy every day, and they’re so healthy!

In this article by Nina Planck, she writes:

Soy farming started around 1100 BC in China, where it was used to build soil fertility and feed animals. Soy beans were not considered fit for humans until the Chinese learned to ferment them, which makes them digestible. Asian diets now include fermented soy beans in the form of natto, miso, tamari, and tempeh.

Soy producers want you to eat more soy — more than the Asians eat, and more than is good for you. The Japanese and Chinese eat 10 grams of soy per day — about two teaspoons. Yet a soy manufacturer recommends Americans eat ten times what the Japanese eat — 100 grams of soy protein per day. In The Soy Zone, Barry Sears recommends a daily diet of a minimum of 50 grams of soy, and up to 75 grams for women and 100 grams for men.

It’s like red wine: a glass or two a day may be good for you; a bottle or two every day rots your liver.

Did you catch that? Asians only eat 2 teaspoons of soy a day, usually as a condiment, and it’s highly fermented! Fermentation takes care of many of the dangers of soy. Plus, the typical Asian will also consume soy with mineral-rich and nutrient-dense foods such as fish broth (naturally high in iodine & other minerals which support the thyroid).
So, Is Soy Bad For You?

The short answer? YES! Let’s be clear on the recent history of soy. The soybean was a modest and unpopular crop until food manufacturers intent on creating cheap vegetable oils convinced the U.S. government to start subsidizing it. The soy was turned into oil, and the industry was left with an industrial waste product. Then somebody had a brilliant idea:

Let’s take this industrial waste product full of toxins and carcinogens — isolated soy protein — and turn it into food that people will eat!

Soy foods were born. From Nina Planck’s article:

The FDA refused to approve isolated soy protein as a safe food additive with the designation “Generally Recognized as Safe.”

Agribusiness giant Archer Daniels Midland withdrew its application for the coveted GRAS status for soy protein, after an outcry from scientists about the toxins and carcinogens that come with it. They can still put soy protein in your food, but they have to get pre-market approval for every product.

Isolated soy protein is no health food. But we don’t eat soy protein with a spoon. How do we eat it? It is the main ingredient in soy burgers, ice cream, milk shakes, and fake cheese. These soy protein products are phony foods — but they must look like the real foods they imitate. So the soy industry transforms a small yellow soy bean into something resembling a hamburger. They make soy “milk” and “ice cream” white and creamy.

The other ingredients in these foods are no better for you than the soy protein that goes into them. Soy milk, for example, is simply a cocktail of soy protein, sugar, and vegetable oil. The “natural” MSG formed in soy processing is already bad for you, but even more MSG, and more flavorings, are added. Imitation foods need a lot of help to be tasty. Many savory soy foods are loaded with additives to give them the flavor of the real foods they mimic. Most imitation meat, for example, contains man-made MSG, which causes migraines and is associated with brain cancer.

Soy foods aren’t real food. They aren’t traditional. They aren’t old. They’re industrial waste products dressed up in pretty clothes and marketed to an ignorant public.

ETA: Reader comments below prompted me to include a couple of additions to this post. The questions: What about tofu or homemade soy milk? Their consumption is quite widespread in Asian cultures, and they’re non-fermented soy foods. Are they okay? The answers: Tofu originated around the 2nd century BC in China, and it was made from fermented bean curd. That is how it was traditionally made before the days of refrigeration. Most modern tofu isn’t fermented anymore. You can still buy varieties of fermented tofu (aka “Stinky Tofu” or “Pickled Tofu”) in some Asian markets, though. Also, according to the most comprehensive online account of soymilk’s history, its use was rare before the 20th century and widespread usage was highly unlikely. In other words, it’s not a traditional food. Nor is non-fermented tofu. They’re the Asian equivalents of margarine, hot bath canning, “vegetable oil,” or soda pop — something relatively new on the food scene which became very widespread with the industrialization of the food supply. And like these industrialized food products, they are bad for your health.

Reliv - Don't Take It!!

Below is a post I just got from one of our readers. I have heard many stories like this over the years and it's worth considering before taking Reliv.

"I wish I would of found this site before I got started on Reliv. I always thought it was odd that a product that cared so much about people was so expensive. It seemed that the people it would help the most were ones that couldn't afford it. But that didn't stop me from putting my hard earned dollars into it. For 4 years I took 4 different products of Reliv, the Soy Sentials was really hard for me to get down, was told if wanted results I had to learn to choke it down. I got results alright, there is no doubt in my mind that Reliv was the source of 2 emergency room visits followed by a week in the hospital all do to kidney stones over a 6 month time period and oh yes, lets not forget the parathyroid surgery. My urologist told me that excessive intake of calcium carbonate can cause both conditions. It took 3 months to finally get all the kidney stones out of my body I had added up the % of daily values I was taking with Reliv and knew the calcium was 3 times higher than recommended, when I brought this to my distributors attention was told I was told that the those percentages were out dated and what my body didn't need, it would pass out. That was before I started having problems, but...I kept taking it. I cant believe I bought into that. I wish I would of listened to my body before I ended up the emergency room the first time. It has been 3 years since I last took a Reliv shake, it was just in the past 6 months that I have started getting back to my normal activities. I had about $2000 of product left when I stopped taking Reliv, I was one of those people who became an affiliate to get the product for my own use at a lower cost. When I took the remaining product back to my distributor was told they couldn't refund my money but would switch out for different Reliv product. Are you serious?! After what I have been through, I will never take a supplement of any kind again. I know my story is old, but the medical expenses, losing out on a least a year of my life and the thousands of dollars I spent on Reliv products for nothing is still fresh to me. A lesson I will never forget, any thing taken in excess is not good for you and by all means, if your body doesn't want something in it and you have to choke it down to get it to take it -- don't take it! What is WRONG with Reliv? Can be Deadly!

Google "dangers of soy" and read up on the first website that pops up. Documentation is provided for the link between soy and breast cancer. Soy acts like an estrogen in the breast and greatly increases the risk of estrogen-sensitive breast cancer. (This is why menopausal women ceased taking estrogen - HRT - to treat hot flashes: its impact upon breast cancer risk.)

My 37yo. sister came down with estrogen-sensitive breast cancer. And in the long run, you may run into life-threatening problems which come only after taking Reliv for many years. (It takes years for cancers to build.)"

My Reliv Motive and Helping People

I am not sure if the poster of this comment is still reading the blog but I wanted to answer this post I got this morning. "I noticed you didn't bother to add my positive comments about Reliv to your blog. That tells me a lot about your motive to "help" people."

The purpose of this blog is and will always remain to post negative stories about Reliv, it's products and business. The web is FULL of sites and reviews that post only the positive or sites that are simple flooded by over ambitious distributors. I want to give people a chance to read the negative without having to dig through all the BS that is floating around. I have been to meetings, I have heard the canned phone calls, most I believe are just pre-digested BS.

Yes Reliv does help some people, good for you, but that will not change the fact that Reliv hurts some as well. So please don't bother sending me your positive stories, they won't get posted.

Reliv May Cause Serious Problems! Important Warning

The following is a post from one of our readers. Please read this article before you damage your body by taking Reliv. And please, if you have had any problems with Reliv, the products or business, please send them to us so others will know. Many distributors make Reliv out to be a miracle but for every success story there is someone who fails or is hurt. "I to have fibromyalgia, I went on reliv, on November 4th,2008 within 3 to 4 days I could not sleep due to lots of flem in my throat, after 3 week of not sleeping one day I suddenly felt very dizzy, I was unable to walk without feeling like I was going to pass out. I sat on my couch all day, at about 6 in the evening my mother called to see how I was feeling, I told her what was going on, and she came to my house to pick me up. I called the hospital hotline and they hade me give the phone to my mom, they told her not to try to take me to the hospital herself, but to call 911 immediately. When they got there my BP which has always been fine, was at 154 over 90. I was rushed to the hospital, and on the way there my head started to hurt so bad, it caused tears to pour out of my eyes, the pain was at a ten or higher, I never want to experience that ever again. The dizziness was so bad I could not even make it to the bathroom without help, how embarrassing. I was in the hospital for three days. By the time I was let out of the hospital I had been off of the Reliv for 3 days, it took another 2 days for the dizziness to go away, and after stopping the Reliv, the flem is gone. One week later, my friend who started Reliv 1 week after me, ended up in the hospital with the same exact symptoms, she was in the hospital for 4 days. I wish I knew what steps to take to go after Reliv, it is to strange that we both had the same problems after starting Reliv, and now that we are off of it we both feel better."

Reliv Causes Low Vitamin D and Anxiety Attacks

Why are Reliv distributors so pushy when it comes to their products? I am sure there are some who truly care about the people they are reaching out to and these few are selling the product at or close to their cost as they believe in helping. The rest and I believe the majority, are only selling the products for the money. The Bible is clear that the "love of money is the root of all evil". Few if any distributors have seen actual results themselves but rather regurgitate the lies they hear in their meetings and phone calls.

"Hi, I had a very pushy realtor who insisted Reliv was the cure-all to everyone's problems. According to her, everyone should be taking Reliv and it is our job to tell others about it because it could help them and blah blah blah ( I heard hours of this talk) My husband took the Reliv vitamin about once or twice a day. The next time he went to the doctor he had a vitamin D deficiency and very low good cholesterol and bad cholesterol. He is now on prescription strength vitamin D and was told to eat more avocados, olives, but also bacon and burgers. Because of the low vitamin D he suffered from a few anxiety attacks which is common in those who have low vitamin D. We have no doubt in our minds that Reliv was the cause of this. Just recently our friends who we like to call "crunchy" gave us a pamphlet on the dangers of soy hoping we would not give anything with soy to our new baby. After reading it we concluded that it must have been the soy in Reliv since it specifically mentioned soy depleting vitamin D and lowering cholesterol."

Reliv Destroys Families and Health

Below is an email that I received from one of our readers. I know I have said this more than once but to me it's sad to see how the love of money that Reliv and MLMs create can cause so much heartache and pain. If the product is so good, why not get the price as cheap as possible so that everyone can afford it and be cured? The answer is very simple, they don't care about the cure, they care about the money. 

I get lots of emails from angry distributors saying what I post isn't true, but my question is, are you selling at cost or are you making money????? If you believe this product works then WHY are you making money off the suffering of other people?????????????

"I recently stumbled upon your site and am thankful for it. It has helped me find some balance again and answer some of my questions.

I started dating someone about 7 months ago whose mother is very high up in the company as a Reliv distributor. After hearing a bit about Reliv from them, I thought it was worth a try since it had helped people with similar health problems that I had. I was already eating healthy and taking lots of supplements for my specific ailments. I got on the product and felt very awkward about having to talk to my boyfriend's mother every few days on a "business call" rather than pursuing a personal relationship with her. She'd always put me on three-way calls with others who had similar health problems to me or my family members, and I started noticing that every call had the same format. I eventually had her stop calling me about it because I was uncomfortable with it and didn't like talking to strangers. Later, she blamed why the product didn't work for me on me on me not being in contact with her to have her monitor my symptoms and dosages. They claim people don't get results unless they get their follow up. Sounds like a business tactic to keep people buying it to me. I felt I should be able to be a responsible adult and own my own health without the babysitting, and I took the shakes faithfully without the follow up calls. They soon increased me to three times a day since I was still getting sick easily and I eventually thought I was allergic to the fibrestore (a third, optional powder to add to the shakes) because I would sneeze around it and was getting stomach aches after taking it. I got off of that, but after 3 months, I still hadn't seen any results so they said to double my shakes . Once I doubled the shakes, I started developing a sensitivity/intolerance, or allergy to soy but didn't know that until later when I researched it. I look back at my photos before and after doubling the shakes and see how swollen I was (my family was wondering if my face shape was just changing in my older age). I also started breaking out with acne like crazy on my face and getting very itchy in my eyes and skin and throat after drinking it (my mouth also felt very swollen and dry). I  had stomach pains and gas pains, etc. and worst of all, my chest often felt super tight, and I just thought my asthma was returning (though doctors said I no longer had asthma) or some other health problem was developing. I was super fatigued all of the time too. This was often associated with my face feeling (or being) flushed. I was so frustrated with the obsession/idol this family made out of Reliv that started researching what others said online. That's when I wondered if I might be having a reaction to soy. I got off for a week or two like all the sites (and a few nutritionist friends) recommended and then tried it again and reacted much worse (a sign of a food allergy).
    The worst part of the whole experience was that Reliv was so important to my boyfriend that we would fight about it all of the time. He and his mom wanted his future wife to share this value. He also said he would be disappointed every day of his life if I wasn’t on it and he feared I would die young. Whenever I was sick, I would be blamed because I wasn’t taking Reliv. They always said that after 15+ years of experience with this product and such miraculous testimonies all of their lives that their belief in it was bullet proof and that they just cared about my health and KNEW it would fix everything getting me off my meds and stuff eventually, so it looked like love. Even once they knew I was allergic to it, they said it could cure my soy allergy if I started with a small bit and worked up to the right amount over long periods of time and stayed in contact with her to monitor my dosage. I wasn’t willing at that time to go through more breathing attacks, and she said I just wasn't "emotionally" ready for it.
    I heard another story from them about a doctor who it didn't work for because he wasn't willing to quit his job for this product in order to get enough sleep with it - the product supposedly won't work unless you get the proper amount of sleep too (and water and whatever other excuse they might have). There's always an excuse for why it did not work for some; that way, they can say it works for everyone who uses it right. Everyone else they say it didn't work for must have just not taken it consistently and that's why they do the calls to keep people motivated and believing in it (sounds like a lot of placebo effect to me).
    Moreover, I highlighted every ingredient on the cans (and the exact matching amounts) that I was taking in different forms beforehand (without the soy that I reacted to) and had all of them except two (plus many others that weren't listed), and all that had been working for me prior to Reliv, but it wasn't enough for them; they still felt I had to be on their particular product. They never acknowledge any other products as also beneficial, and though they admit and know this is just a supplement, they act like it's a magical formula. They also never seem to let others have their own opinions. It's fine to recommend it to someone you think it will help, but to never let the topic drop is just wrong. My boyfriend and I would have 45-60 minute conversations about it every few days with him trying to convince me.  I believe it can be a good product for many, but I am not okay with the way they do business or worship this stuff. I came under such confusion about the product while I was in that relationship. I felt like some of the "brainwashing" was rubbing off on me, but now I know it's just not practical. Hospitals would be cleared and news would spread like lightning if what they said was true. It'd be the fountain of youth. They say they never have been sick while on the product but I saw them become under the weather and also knew they took other herbs when they started to not feel well. So be aware that if you have symptoms like I had, you may be developing a food allergy (the more soy you take, the more likely you are to become sensitive to it...and one guy I knew on it was super emotional - maybe from all of the estrogen in it). Don't fall into the brainwashing. If it works for you, fine, but be logical about it not being possible to be a "cure-all.""

Reliv's Return Policy is Smoke and Mirrors

I am getting really tired of people writing in and telling me about Reliv's "Return Policy". This policy depends on the honesty of the distributor selling the product. First of all, if the distributor says no, it isn't going to happen and this happens a LOT more than you think. Secondly the distributor usually tries to convince you that you haven't taken the products properly or for long enough till you run out of time and then they don't have to return your money.

Reliv International doesn't return your money directly to you. IF for some reason you don't like their products, they taste bad, you didn't feel better, etc and you call the 800 number, they tell you sorry but you need to contact the person who sold them to you AND you MUST have all of the cans to get your money back. The distributor who sold the products to you has to return the money from their pocket and they have to get it back from the company, thus you see why they don't like to do it.

And if I'm not mistaken, they only offer a 30 day return policy BUT they encourage you to try it for 45 days. I have rejected many comments from unhappy distributors writing in to say that to get he best results you must take the product for 45 days. How convenient!

Reliv's products and marketing are things of the past. There are WAY better and healthier products out there. Don't settle for something just because a friend is forcing you to listen or buy from them. Over 95% of Reliv Distributors fail to make money and most go into extreme debt buying the products.

Reliv Can Kill You! Reliv Distributors Don't Know More Than Your MD

The following is a post I just received from one of our readers. Besides knowing someone personally that this happened to, this is just another example of how people allow the money to get the best of them. These Reliv Distributors DON'T know more than your doctor and NEVER EVER stop doing what your MD has said. Sadly it cost this man his life!

"My husband was persuaded by the Reliv organization to stop all western type medicine for his prostate cancer. His doctor had told him that his hormone drugs were not working as well and his PSA was slowing going up. He had many Reliv salespeople call him and he ended up believing that he could he healed of his prostate cancer by using their products. So he didn't listen to his oncologist, his MD,his family, or his friends, the gospel truth only came from the Reliv Organization that sold him thousands of dollars of their products, stating he would be building up his immune system to fight his cancer and he was told by many that his PSA numbers would go down by just taking their miracle products. Of course the organization has their disclaimers, but, the salespeople tell the tale of the many people with all sorts of horrible diseases like cancer, ALS, etc.,that are cured by their products. I spoke to several of these people and told them what I thought of their scam for profit, they would then just call my husband more with a Doctor on a conference call, or another Reliv Ambassador that would dispel any negatives, and then go on to state that if the current purchased products were not working as well, that now he should try another product. Because my husband was persuaded by these people to forgo the only treatment that would have prolonged his life for several years, he now is facing death because his prostate cancer has spread to his brain, which is rare, but had he listened to his doctors 6 months ago when he was still very healthy and thriving, his family would have been able to enjoy life with him for several more years, like so many of our friends who have successfully beat or kept cancer at bay with western practices. I will be going to Congress with this when my husband passes, to help legislate law that prohibits these type of scams on the sick. I will also be speaking with my attorney soon about this very sad story, and believe me Reliv, and other such scammers, I'm coming for you soon.......And my lawyers are all family, and we won't settle out of court, you have messed with the wrong family!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

Reliv / MLM Doesn't Belong in Church

Christians REALLY need to get their focus off of money and back to where it really belongs. WHY would a Christian radio station or church members focus so much on selling Reliv or any other MLM? The bottom line is, they aren't reading their Bibles enough. The Bible is clear, "The love of money is the root of all evil". MLM's promise easy money and people / Christians get so focused on making a quick dollar that they forget about the gospel message. Reliv and MLM's are just another trap of the devil to get us side-tracked!

"I have always stayed away from Reliv, mainly because of their ads on the Christian radio station in town that does one commercial after another of products that they themselves "highly endorse." Fortunately we have some commercial free Christian alternatives here so that I don't very often have to hear any of that...but that was my first exposure to Reliv. There was also a big distributor in our former church who just didn't want to take no for answer. One evening she called me with her upline wanting to tell me all about the product and the opportunity... I couldn't believe she was so pushy, and politely but firmly as possible I let them know I wasn't interested. Another family friend is also in the business and is wanting us to try one of the products for my husband has been in the hospital now for weeks with a bad viral infection. She also has an upline she wants me to talk to. I found your site just out of curiosity because my gut, once again, recoils at this tactic...I'm sure she is well meaning and I know she believes in the products but I just don't like the company, and now I have more to go on when it comes to the products. Lawsuit Against Reliv Over Lead Exposure

Why I Believe Reliv' International Is Going Back To $1.35

Disclosure: I am short RELV. Here are some the reasons why.

I believe we are going back to somewhere around $1.35 -- not just because that is where the stock had previously been trading, and not just because that is near book value. But because the hype that exploded the stock price does not compensate for the poor fundamentals. And by the way, was the recent press release timed to divert attention from the California litigation?

See, Reliv International (RELV) is in the middle of an accusation of "failure to warn consumers that they have been exposed to lead from several of the company's nutritional health products. Lead is a chemical known to the State of California to cause cancer, birth defects and other reproductive harm." ~ Case: CIV1300429 Superior Court of the State of California


That complaint was initiated in January of 2013 by Environment Research Center, ("ERC")a non-profit corporation. A proposed stipulated consent judgment was later signed by Reliv's CFO and attorney. As usual, the defendant does not have to admit guilt. Nonetheless, according to the proposed consent judgment, as signed by Reliv's representatives,
  • Civil penalties must be paid "pursuant to Health & Safety Code Section 25249.7(b)(1)"
  • A portion of the above penalty is to be paid to the office of Environmental Hazard Assessment.
And most telling of all,
  • "Since receiving ERC's Notices of Violation, Reliv has revised the formula for all of the covered Products to bring the lead levels in the Covered products that are manufactured going forward to below 0.5 micrograms per day, the level at which a warning would be required pursuant to Proposition 65." How can one bring levels below a required limit without implying that one had been above it?

And what was the big deal with the press release announcing "exclusive rights" to Lunasin? Reliv's price exploded. Ryan Montgomery, Reliv president claimed, "For the first time we own an ingredient in its entirety, from the extraction process to the patented mechanisms of action within the body. And lunasin isn't just any ingredient; it's the world's first epigenetic superfood." ~ Press Release"Reliv Acquires Exclusive Rights to 'Superfood' Lunasin"

It is hard to know exactly what Mr. Montgomery meant. Certainly he is not claiming to own the natural ingredient, lunasin. He may however be referring to the trademark Lunasin,which according to its registration is for synthetic peptides. (USPTO Trademark Registration(See my last article below, or on Seeking Alpha: Reliv' the Hype.)

Add to all of this Reliv's disclosure that some of its products contain genetically modified organisms and one wonders what kind of reaction the distributors will have when the news gets out.

So why do I believe that Reliv's price will go down in the long run? Not "just because" of the points mentioned above. I don't think that any of the above matters as much as the simple fact that Reliv appears to be losing its distributor base -- one year at a time. And with that decrease, its sales are also decreasing -- one year at a time. The numbers say it all ....

Is Reliv good for your Children???

We just received the following from one of our readers. I put this out for all of you to read and hopefully someone will have some answers for Julie Ann.

"I have a 5 year old daughter who has been taking Reliv now for approx 3 years every day as a vitamin supplement . I stress a supplement as distinct from replacing her daily nutritional needs of fresh fruit and veg as a growing child.
In fact it has become more of a " flavour" to add to her milk drink every morning. I had even forgotten that it was a soy based supplement.
I have used various milks - never juices - as the liquid with which to blend reliv. So soy milk, A2 milk ( an Australian based milk product which purports to have the casein from cows milk taken out of it) and , for the last 12 months or so, oat milk. ( since reading about the dangers now associated with soy)

I give my daughter fresh produce daily - and try to avoid processed foods as often as possible. Navigating the minefield of additives thrown at you from every corner of the supermarket is hard and has been a long and involved learning curve for me. Harder now is the fact that my eyesight has just started its downhill slope so I have to take out glasses every time I read an ingredients listing!
Funnily enough in Australia the ingredients listings are controlled by ANZFA - and I have many friends in the food industry who have never been questioned about their products. The government here is too busy chasing up restaurants who have been not following health codes with preparation etc. Our massive explosion in obesity in the Australian population however, has finally caused some fantastic exposure and warnings about our diets which is , in turn, causing the government and the supermarket giants ( of which there are 2 ) to sit up and finally take notice of offering the consumer some healthier alternatives. ( I have always loved my regular visits to Wholefoods in your country and crave for one to open here in Adelaide . )
So you can see that I take a more than active interest in what we survive on as a human species in the world!
So it was with great fear that I recently had my daughter diagnosed with no more than 4 crowns, and 4 fillings which have to be fitted into her little mouth on her baby teeth. You can imagine the shock to learn this when I have been fastidious with her teeth cleaning and regular yearly visits to the dentist since her first tooth came through.
I do not give my daughter sugar in any form - apart from the small amounts found in yoghurt, bread , ( whole grain ) , and the naturally occurring forms in her fruit. So why this bad reaction ? We have ample amounts of fluoride in the drinking water here and I have never given my daughter bottled or filtered water.
So then I re read the back of the reliv tin -
Contains Maltodextrin, sodium chloride, fructose and sucrose.
I rang the Australian hotline when my mother first purchased reliv for my daughter and questioned them at length about the ingredients. Of particular interest to me was the calcium supplement ( as I had decided to take my daughter off cows milk ) , the iodine supplements and the all of the vitamin supplements.

My daughter has been complaining of itchy eyes for the last year.
My daughter has been complaining of bloating for the last year.
My daughter has been complaining of sore joints for the last few months.
My daughter has been unduly tired and cranky on a regular basis.
I have taken her to an eye specialist - nothing wrong.
I have had her blood checked - nothing wrong.

I will be taking her of Reliv after reading this post - too many familiar symptoms here for my liking. Is her tooth decay directly linked to reliv? Who knows as the manufacturers wont get back to me with the amounts of fructose and sucrose in their product. I am just kicking myself now that I didn't think of taking her off it ages ago.

Soy Controversy and Reliv, Is it really healthy?

I found the following article while surfing tonight and I thought that I would pass this on for you to read and consider. More and more they are finding that Soy and Soy products are not as healthy as they once use to be. By doing just a few minutes of research on the Internet you can find PAGES of information about the dangers. And since Reliv is soy based, this is a concern for any and all who use Reliv products. The article below is by Vreni Gurd.

The soy industry has managed to market a waste product as a health food, and gullible consumers are eating their way to health problems.

Soy is often touted as healthy, and it can be if you pick your soy products carefully, but most of the soy that is on the market is actually very hard on our systems. I was completely fooled by the propaganda on soy and bought into this one hook, line and sinker, feeling virtuous switching to soy milk when I found out I was sensitive to poor quality dairy.

Like all grains, legumes, nuts and seeds, soybeans have a phytate layer to stop the beans from sprouting unless there is adequate moisture and warmth. The phytate layer in soybeans is much thicker than in other grains and legumes and cannot be eliminated with soaking, sprouting or long slow cooking. This means that soybeans are very difficult to digest, and the phytic acid reduces assimilation of calcium, magnesium copper, iron and zinc.

Soy interferes with protein digestion, and the soy estrogens are endocrine disruptors, (by binding with estrogen receptors) potentially creating fertility problems and breast or uterine cancer in women, and reducing testosterone in men. These soy phytoestrogens also are anti-thyroid agents, causing sluggish thyroids, possibly thyroid cancer, and weight gain.

Soy increases the body's requirement for B12 and Vitamin D. Soy food processing results in the formation of MSG, which is a well known neurotoxin (nerve poison), and soy contains high levels of aluminum which is known to be toxic to the nervous system and the kidneys. Unless labeled organic, assume that all soybean products are genetically modified.

It is worth noting that in January 2006, the American Heart Association reversed its position recommending the consumption of soy to lower the chance of heart disease, after reviewing 22 recent studies, and noted that the FDA's original recommendation was based on a single study funded by the soy industry. The soy that should be avoided are soy isolate products like:

Soy milk
Soy protein powder/bars
Soy nuts
Soy cheese
Soy burgers
Soy yogurt
Soy ice cream
Soy baby formula


By avoiding packaged food, one can avoid soy disguised on food labels as:

Textured vegetable protein (TVP)
Textured plant protein
Hydrolyzed vegetable protein (HVP)
Vegetable protein concentrate
Monosodium Glutamate (MSG)
Lecithin (usually from soy)
Vegetable oil (usually from soy)
Vegetable broth (usually from soy)
Bouillon (usually from soy)
Natural flavour (usually from soy)
Mono-diglyceride(usually from soy)


Soy infant formula is a very bad idea, as the baby gets far too much phytoestrogen for its bodyweight, which messes with the baby's hormones even more than in adults. The estrogenic effects of soy on infants can be irreversible, resulting in delayed or absent sexual maturation in males, and extremely accelerated sexual maturation in females. Soy formula predisposes females to breast cancer and fertility problems later in life.

For those of you that are dairy intolerant and want a milky substitute for your whole-grain cereal, you may be able to tolerate a non-homogenized organic plain yogurt (raw is better if you can get it), or look for a rice milk or almond milk that does not have a vegetable oil listed in the ingredient list, or try organic full-fat coconut milk. Yummy! (No, the fat in coconut milk will not make you fat - lauric acid is a medium-chain fatty-acid that is metabolized immediately by the liver, and is very healthful for the body due to its antibacterial and antiviral factors.)

If you are a soy fan, naturally fermented and/or cultured ORGANIC soy (to avoid GMO) is very healthful, so look for foods like:

Miso – try to find it with unrefined sea salt
Tamari – wheat free
Natto
Tempeh
Extra-firm Tofu with nigari
Organic Edamame, cooked
Organic Soybean sprouts
